Tax-generated revenue flowing into the state treasury during January was $14.1 million higher than projected.

The elevation of Kansas University chancellor to brigadier general in the Air National Guard marked the second time KU had been headed by a general. The first chancellor to hold that rank had been John Fraser, who headed KU from 1867 to 1874 after serving in the Civil War.

Records showed that January had been one of the coldest and snowiest in local history. The average high had been 29.84 degrees, 10.06 degrees below normal. The average low was 13, 7.58 degrees below normal. The snowfall had measured 21.9 inches, 6.4 inches above normal.

The city commission planned a public hearing to review a request for $1.5 million in industrial revenue bonds to fund construction of a “speculative” industrial building just west of the Santa Fe Industrial Park in northwest Lawrence. The request was being made by Jack Harris, Lawrence postmaster, and a group of local businessmen.
