Case against defendant in attack on bicycle path ready for January trial

The court case involving 30-year-old man accused of attacking a woman on a southwest Lawrence bike path last summer appears ready for a January jury trial.

Attorneys for both sides in the case of William E. Nichols told Douglas County District Judge Peggy Kittel Monday morning that they were prepared for the Jan. 10 trial.

Nichols faces charges of aggravated kidnapping, attempted rape and aggravated battery. He’s accused of grabbing a 23-year-old woman off her bike and attacking her June 16 on the bike path between the Youth Sports Complex soccer fields and Clinton Lake.

The woman testified at a June preliminary hearing in the case and accused Nichols of grabbing her off her bike on June 16. She alleged he then fondled her and held a knife to her throat.

Two men rescued the woman and chased her attacker away, who was later arrested by officers. At the time of the attack, the woman was visiting a family in Lawrence.
