From the Lawrence Daily World for Dec. 20, 1910:

• “The new city directory, which is published biennially by the Polk people, was distributed in Lawrence today. The directory contains 8,830 names and credits Lawrence with a population of 22,070. This is approximately 8,000 too high but may be explained by the large number of student names appearing.”
• “Harry Guenther, an eight year old living in Palmyra township, brought eight jack rabbit heads to the county clerk’s office this morning in the expectation of getting a bounty upon them. He was told that the county had ceased paying such bounties many years ago. The lad also had 19 crow heads which he disposed of for 95 cents. The bounty for crow and gopher is no small item in Douglas county. For eleven months of the present year the county clerk has issued warrants for $217 for such bounties. May, which is corn planting time, is evidently the best month, nearly $75 being claimed during this one month in crow bounties.”
