Hummels sale to benefit Lawrence Community Shelter

Jo Renfro, Lawrence, sets up a large display of Hummels that friend Virginia Eddy is donating as a new item to raise funds for the Lawrence Community Shelter.

Virginia Eddy had a treasure trove in her basement: A complete Hummel Nativity scene.

A former dealer of the prized German figurines, Eddy has loved the 260 series since the 1960s, displaying the large 12-inch likenesses of Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus whenever she found room during the holidays. But she hadn’t been able to find the room too often and, while talking to friend Joanne Renfro, of Lawrence, decided it might be a good item to donate the Lawrence Community Shelter for fundraising purposes.

The complete Hummel set is worth in the neighborhood of $3,000 from vendors online, and Eddy hopes it might raise close to that amount for the shelter, 214 W. 10th St. Anyone interested in purchasing the set can contact the shelter at 832-8864.
