Sylvia ? A two-vehicle collision in south-central Kansas sent two drivers to a hospital and caused a massive natural gas fire when the vehicles hit a main line.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year-old Derek Zongker of Sylvia was driving a pickup pulling a trailer filled with livestock when he hit a pickup driven by 19-year-old Alex Brashear of Sterling.

The Hutchinson News reports the vehicles hit a pipeline metering station and sheared off a 4-inch riser pipe attached to a natural gas pipeline. Brashear got out of his vehicle and helped Zongker out of his before the pipeline ignited.

Winds were gusting up to nearly 50 mph while firefighters let the fire burn itself out. Three miles of pipeline were shut down for several hours to avoid a continuous blaze.
