From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 13, 1970:

• The chair of the Featured Speakers Committee for Student Union Activities at Kansas University announced that famed economist John Kenneth Galbraith had indicated that he was willing to speak at KU in April 1971. Another “name” speaker, Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, was also scheduled to speak at KU in March.
• The draft call to be announced by the Pentagon in January 1971 was to total about 17,000, making it the highest monthly call in nine months. It was also the first draft call since September 1970. The Pentagon had disclosed that its re-enlistment rates had dropped to their lowest level in 15 years.
• One of the five persons who had been charged with throwing rocks at KU’s Military Science building in May 1970 had been granted a suspension of jail time until June 1 on a misdemeanor charge of property destruction. In a written statement, the man said that, as a conscientious objector, he was doing alternative service in Norman, OK, in lieu of military service.
