25 years ago: KU football coach leaves for Pittsburgh

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 13, 1985:

  • Mike Gottfried, who had coached football at Kansas University for the previous three seasons, announced that he was leaving KU for the head coach position at Pittsburgh University. Monte Johnson, KU’s athletic director, expressed sorrow that Gottfried, whom he had hired in Dec. 1982 to replace Don Fambrough, had decided to move on, but added that the university was moving “as swiftly as possible” to name a successor.
  • Representatives from Baldwin, Eudora, Lawrence and Lecompton were meeting with Douglas County commissioners to discuss ways to control “vicious and aggressive” animals such as pit bulls. Meanwhile, 26 local doctors had submitted a petition to the county saying that they were “incensed” at the recent attack on a 3-year-old child by pit bull terriers. The doctors were urging commissioners to consider an ordinance prohibiting ownership of this breed “before such an atrocity occurs again.”
  • An advertisement proclaimed a Grand Opening for “Pies By Von” on New Hampshire Street behind Von’s Harvest Cafe. Ten different varieties of pie were available, ranging from $4.45 to $5.95 for a whole pie or $1.25 to $1.65 for a slice. Soups with bread and cheese were also available.
