The following are the Journal-World’s All-Area sports teams for the 2010 fall season:

Football all-area first team: Boomer Mays, Eudora; Kyle Brunson, Mill Valley; Josh Hoffman, Baldwin; Braad Strauss, Lawrence High; Jamal Brown, Lawrence High; Nate Scott, Veritas Christian; Dalton Hughes, Wellsville; Justin McCandless, Free State; Trent Robb, Perry-Lecompton; Dylan Perry, Free State.

Football player of the year: Baldwin senior Josh Hoffman.

Hoffman, the Bulldogs’ running back, rushed 181 times for 1,623 yards and 23 touchdowns this fall. The multi-purpose Hoffman caught 20 passes for 519 yards and three additional scores. Hoffman was also Baldwin’s leading tackler on defense, with 121 tackles, eight for loss, three interceptions (two of which he returned for touchdowns) and three fumble recoveries. Baldwin went 10-2 this fall.

Football coach of the year: Doug Bennett, Veritas Christian.

Bennett led the Eagles to an undefeated season (10-0) and their first Kansas Christian Athletic Association state title in school history this fall. Veritas defeated St. Mary’s Academy, 46-30, on Nov. 6 for the state title.

Volleyball player of the year: Tonganoxie senior Molly O’Hagan.

O’Hagan, who signed a Div. I scholarship to play college volleyball next year at Cal-State Bakersfield, had 422 kills, 155 blocks, 377 digs and 26 aces for the Chieftains, who went 30-11 this fall. O’Hagan is a three-time All-Kaw Valley League first-team selection.

Volleyball coach of the year: Kristen Oberzan, Veritas Christian.

Oberzan led the Eagles to their first state championship in school history on Oct. 30 in Manhattan, where Veritas held off Wichita Area Homeschool Athletic Associated in a grueling, five-set match that lasted 2 1/2 hours.

Volleyball all-area honorable mention: Jenny Whitledge, Tonganoxie; Madison Maring, Eudora; Kiely Mosiman, Morgan Green, Lawrence High; Charlotte Burch, Seabury Academy; Reilly Moore, Shelby Holmes, Free State; Kaysha Green, Monica Howard, Baldwin; Danielle Dowdy, De Soto; Kristen Finger, Veritas Christian; Molly Oshinski, Mill Valley.

Boys soccer all-area first team: Oliver Siemes, Eudora; Diego Gonzalez, Free State; Louis Joslyn, Baldwin; Octavio Villa, De Soto; Addison Jones, Perry-Lecompton; Dylan Turpin, Perry-Lecompton; Justin Riley, Lawrence High; Zach Wustefeld, Lawrence High; Tony Libeer, Free State; Marcus Titterington, Tonganoxie.

Boys soccer player of the year: Free State senior Diego Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was a first-team All Central region selection, a first-team All-Sunflower League pick and a first-team All-State selection this season for a Free State team that finished 6-9-2.

Boys soccer coach of the year: Mark Joslyn, Baldwin.

Joslyn led the Bulldogs to an opening-round victory in regionals over Fort Scott this season. The Bulldogs finished with a solid 9-8-1 record.

Boys soccer all-area honorable mention: Joey Cool, Caleb Michaels, Baldwin; Preston Newsome, Free State; John Williams, Jordan Riffel, De Soto; Ryan Akagi, Perry-Lecompton; Valerie Pringle, Jacob Beck, Eudora; Matt Briggs, Tyler Bartholomew, Tonganoxie.

Boys cross country first team: Ethan Hartzell, Baldwin; Tony Weiss, Baldwin; Angel Vasquez, De Soto; Logan Sloan, Free State; Kain Anderson, Free State; Zach Andregg, Lawrence High; Brandon McCaffrey, Seabury.

Boys cross country athlete of the year: Baldwin senior Tony Weiss.

Weiss finished second individually at the Class 4A state cross country meet on Oct. 30 at Wamego Country Club. The Bulldogs captured the Class 4A team title with 66 points, topping second-place and three-time defending champion Mulvane (89 points). Weiss placed second at the regionals meet and first in the Frontier League meet. He also won the Baldwin Invite and the Sabetha Invite in the fall.

Girls cross country all-area first team: Elizabeth Sigvaldson, Baldwin; Sienna Durr, Baldwin; Katelyn Barnes, Baldwin; Lacey Erickson, De Soto; Grace Morgan, Lawrence High; Kate Albrecht, Seabury Academy; Lynn Robinson, Free State.

Girls cross country athlete of the year: Baldwin junior Elizabeth Sigvaldson.

Sigvaldson placed seventh individually at the Class 4A state cross country meet on Oct. 30 at Wamego Country Club. The Bulldogs dominated the field and captured the Class 4A team title with 58 points. The next-closest team to Baldwin was runner-up De Soto with 105 points. Sigvaldson took sixth place at the regionals meet and placed fifth at the Frontier League meet.

Girls cross country all-area honorable mention: Katie Jones, Heather Karlin, Baldwin; Heidi Dumesich, Maddie McCaffrey, Seabury Academy; Michala Ruder, Emily Davidson, Lawrence High; Beth Reichenberger, De Soto.

Boys and girls cross country coach of the year: Mike Spielman, Baldwin.

It didn’t get much better than Spielman’s Bulldogs this fall. Baldwin won the Class 4A state boys title and girls title on Oct. 30 in Wamego. Baldwin has won the past four Class 4A state girls crowns.
