From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 10, 1985:

• The usual ominous blend of cold, dry air from the north and warm, wet air from the south was about to produce a nasty winter storm for Kansas, bringing “plummeting temperatures and a range of shivery unpleasantries.” A travelers’ advisory had been issued as .30 inch of freezing rain fell in the morning and afternoon, causing twenty-five accidents within the city limits, most of them around 5:00 p.m. More “unpleasantries” were expected overnight in the form of snow and temperatures near zero.
• The Kansas rowing crew was still hoping to move the Union Pacific depot from North Lawrence to the south bank of the Kansas River to use as a boathouse [see OHT for June 7, 2010]. Now, the group was abandoning the original plan to take the building apart stone by stone in order to move it. The new plan involved cutting the depot in half and moving it to the new site. A consultant had just completed a feasibility report saying that the move would be difficult, but possible, and would cost between $125,000 and $175,000.
