40 years ago: Old KU sorority house badly damaged by overnight fire

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 9, 1970:

  • Kansas University’s old Pi Beta Phi sorority house, which had been converted 10 years earlier into an Extension Service building, had been badly damaged by an overnight fire. The state fire marshal’s office was investigating the possibility of arson.
  • KU buildings and grounds crews were beginning the work of cleaning up after many campus buildings had been defaced during a student strike earlier in the week. Workers were pictured using a sand blaster to remove spray-painted slogans from the face of Fraser Hall.
  • Attorney-general elect Vern Miller, in a telephone interview with the newspaper, declined to outline his specific plans for dealing with the “drug ridden hippie commune” in Lawrence that he had spoken of during his campaign. “Just watch,” he suggested. “I meant what I said…. Less talk and more action” would be his theme while in office, he said.
  • The McCrory-Otasco store advertised the “Captain Kangaroo” doll (As Seen On TV!), who would say 10 different things when you pulled the “talking string.” “All kiddies love him,” said the ad. A $7 value, the Captain was available for only $3.99. Shoppers could also buy a Hot Wheels dual-lane racing set for $8.97 or a “Bill Russell” basketball, goal, and pump for only $8.87.
