Crime Stoppers to honor two Lawrence men who rescued woman from brutal attack on bike path

Crime Stoppers of Lawrence and Douglas County will give an award to two Lawrence men who helped rescue a woman from a June attack on a southwest Lawrence bike path.

Patrick Rapp, the Crime Stoppers president, said Nathaniel Mehl and Aidan Waugh, who already received commendation awards from the Lawrence Police Department, will receive the awards at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Henry T’s Bar and Grill, 3520 W. Sixth St.

Mehl and Waugh were running June 16 on the pavement between the Youth Sports Complex and Clinton Lake Dam when they noticed a man attacking and stabbing a 23-year-old woman.

They chased the man away and helped the woman to safety. Police later arrested William Nichols, and he faces several charges and a January trial in the case.

Crime Stoppers operates an anonymous crime tips hot line, 785-843-TIPS, and provides rewards for good information in cases.

Rapp said Henry T’s owner Sean Gerrity will also receive an award for his annual support of Crime Stoppers, including the use of the restaurant for the annual fundraiser, Tips for Tips.
