From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 7, 1970:

• What effect was the recent warm weather having on the Christmas-shopping season downtown? Mrs. Dolores Hass of Haas Hardware said that the weather was possibly “too nice” and that people were going farther afield for their shopping. “It’s not surprising,” she added. “They do this every year when it’s nice. A good snowstorm would be the best thing that could happen.” Done Cole, manager of McCrory-Otasco, agreed that “you can’t get in the spirit of Christmas when it’s 70 degrees out,” but said that business was still “mighty good.”
• Display advertisements suggested various ideas for gifts. Zercher Photo’s ad showed a 5-piece projector outfit – “Everything you need for brilliant slide showing in your home tonight!” – for $99.95. The Alley Shop at Campbell’s advertised “Handsome Pant Suits For Her Christmas,” and Weaver’s was offering “Magnificent Furs To Make Her Dreams Come True.” First National Bank of Lawrence suggested that you could buy a $500 CD and get a free dictionary, which you could use as a Christmas present.
