National briefs: CU replaces football coach Dan Hawkins with Jon Embree

Boulder, Colo. — Jon Embree will be introduced as Colorado’s new football coach this morning.

Word got out late last week that Embree, the Washington Redskins tight ends coach, was athletic director Mike Bohn’s choice to replace Dan Hawkins, who was fired after going 19-39 in four-plus seasons in Boulder.

Embree will be joined in Boulder next month by fellow former Buffalo Eric Bieniemy, who will finish out the season as the Minnesota Vikings’ running-backs coach before returning to Colorado to serve as Embree’s offensive coordinator.

McDowell upstages Woods

Thousand Oaks, Calif. — U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell capped his greatest year with two clutch putts that gave him the greatest comeback ever against Tiger Woods, who lost a four-stroke lead.

McDowell holed a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to force a playoff Sunday in the Chevron World Challenge, then made another birdie putt from a little longer away to deny Woods a victory in his final tournament of the year.
