Katheryn Claypool never goes anywhere without a box filled of colorful yarn and crochet hooks. Whether she is sitting in front of the TV, taking a break at being nanny, sitting on an airplane or at home with family, she is likely to be crocheting.

The 24-year-old learned how to crochet when she was 10, but rediscovered the craft last winter when she was snowed in with family. Claypool, who now hand-makes everything from scarves and neck warmers to baby hats and baby cocoons, will be participating for the first time in Saturday’s annual Holiday Extravaganza hosted by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department.

Duane Peterson, special event supervisor, said all of the 80 available booth spaces are sold out. He said unlike other art events, the Extravaganza will include items from both commercial vendors and local artists.

“The show is not limited to handmade arts and crafts,” Peterson said. “You will see a little bit of everything at this show, from commercial items to handmade crafts to delicious food and fun activities.”

Commercial items include wickless candles, purses and belts, while handmade items include pottery, pendants, fudge and pastries..

Residents can also get a sneak preview of the horses and buggies that will be in the Christmas parade, which starts at 11 a.m. in Downtown Lawrence.

“It’s a great opportunity to get started with Christmas shopping and be involved in the holiday season,” Peterson said.
