Weatherization grants available for Lawrence homeowners

For Lawrence homeowners looking to prepare their homes for the cold winter ahead, the city of Lawrence might have grants to help cover the cost.

Through a Community Development Block Grant, the city has money that can be used for weatherization projects such as attic insulation, storm windows and entry door weather-stripping. The hope is that homeowners will reduce the amount of cold air entering a home and in turn increase energy efficiency.

The grant comes with the following requirements:

• Must be the first time the homeowner participated in the program.

• The home must be owner occupied and cannot have more than two dwelling units.

• The homeowner can’t exceed family income guidelines, which range from an average gross income of $38,950 for a single person to $55,600 for a family of four.

Grants for energy savings improvements do not have to be repaid.

Applications are available at the Planning and Development Services Office, 1 Riverfront Plaza, Level 1, Suite 110, or online at lawrenceks.org/pds/housing_programs.

Grants are awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis. The deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 31. For more information call 832-7700
