California prep Angelo Chol, the No. 5-rated big man in the high school recruiting class of 2011, will attend Kansas University’s Late Night in the Phog on Oct. 15 in Allen Fieldhouse.

Chol, a 6-foot-8, 205-pound senior center from San Diego’s Hoover High, is also considering Washington, UConn, Georgetown, Louisville, Arizona, North Carolina and others.

Known as the top shot-blocker in the class, Chol has yet to announce dates for any other campus visits.

Hoover High coach Ollie Goulston said Monday that Chol, who averaged 16.1 points, 13.1 rebounds and 8.4 blocks his junior season, soon would reveal his list of finalists.

KU is also recruiting the No. 4-rated center in the Class of 2011: Norvel Pelle, a 6-9, 190-pounder from Compton (Calif.) High, who is also considering Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, UConn, Baylor, Texas and others.

The centers in the Class ranked No.’s 1-3 respectively are: Rakeem Christmas, 6-8, from Bryn Athyn, Pa., who has committed to Syracuse; Tyler Adams, 6-8, from Brandon, Miss., who has committed to Duke and Amir WIlliams, 6-9 from Beverly Hills, Mich., who has Michigan, Michigan State and many others on his list.

Chol, who was born in Sudan, lived in Egypt for a short time, then moved to San Diego at the age of 7, did not start playing basketball until the seventh grade at Wilson Middle School in San Diego. He was 6-2 at the time.

“I heard of basketball because I had seen it on YouTube and ESPN,” Chol told Maxpreps.com.

“He couldn’t even make a basket,” Goulston told MaxPreps. “In just the last year I can see the difference. It’s not all about his size. Angelo is willing to get up at 6 in the morning just to work on stuff like his ball-handling. It’s all about developing his game, He’s willing to do whatever it takes. He’s a special kid and a high-character person.”

Chol is the second California high school senior to announce plans to attend Late Night. Josiah Turner, a 6-3 point guard from Sacramento High, also has trips scheduled to Arizona, UConn, Louisville and Oregon. He’s the country’s No. 12-rated player.

High school juniors to attend Late Night: Zach Peters, 6-9 power forward, Prestonwood Christian Academy in Plano, Texas, who has committed to KU, and Nino Jackson, 6-2, Ardmore (Okla.) High. Sophomore Travis Jorgenson, 5-10 from Rock Bridge High in Columbia, Mo., also tells Rivals.com he will be at Late Night.

Selby update

Kansas University freshman Josh Selby is on campus, but has not yet started to attend classes four days into first semester. Selby, a 6-3 point guard from Baltimore’s Lake Clifton High, has had his eligibility questioned by the NCAA, which is looking into a relationship between Selby and Robert Frazier, who advised Selby and his mom during the recruiting process. Frazier is Carmelo Anthony’s business manager.

“I can’t comment on the situation,” KU coach Bill Self said Monday night. “I’ve been told to not comment on anything. Hopefully the situation will be cleared up and resolved very soon.”

Both Self and Selby’s mom have said they are confident the country’s No. 1-rated player will be cleared to play at KU soon. Selby’s mom has indicated she’s spoken to the NCAA about the matter.

Self declined any further comment on Selby’s situation. The NCAA does not comment on eligibility issues of student-athletes.

Kent Sterling, the owner and editor of Indianapolis-based kentsterling.com, reported Monday that the NCAA investigation into Selby’s amateur status “stretches beyond Bill Self, Selby, KU and Frazier. It includes the basketball programs at Kentucky and Tennessee and their relationships during the recruiting process with Frazier and Selby. This is according to a person close to the investigation.”

Sterling told the J-W in an e-mail that his source would not reveal specifics.
