Sea Scouts from Topeka and Lawrence, competed in the fifth biennial William I. Koch International Sea Scout Regatta, Aug. 1-6 at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn. Approximately 80 young men and women from New Zealand, Australia, England, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Brazil, and Trinidad and Tobago sailed against youths from across the United States.

Two-person teams were divided by ability into two 20-boat fleets in a sail-off held on the first day. More experienced teams competed for the Koch Cup Trophy, modeled closely after the America’s Cup. Less experienced sailors vied for the Kiwi Cup, a unique trophy in the form of a native totem from New Zealand. Sailing for Sea Scout Ship 5703, the team of Ky Hudgins and Bailie Richards placed ninth, and the team of Rachel Sampson and Sarah Remfry placed 17th in the Kiwi Cup fleet. Ship 5703 is sponsored by Shawnee Heights High School and the Shawnee Yacht Club. Richards is a student at Lawrence High School.

The Kansas Scouts spent a day in safety-at-sea training provided by the USCG, where they performed many hands-on activities and got a ride on a USCG cutter. They saw a nuclear submarine in the Thames River and visited the USS Nautilus Museum and the Mystic Seaport Museum.

Boy Scouts of Troop 52, charted to First United Methodist Church of Lawrence, spent the weekend of Aug. 13 canoeing on the Gasconade River, near Richland, Mo. The weekend theme was “Hawaiian luau” and featured meals with pineapple and coconut dishes and fruit drinks. Scouts and adults wore grass skirts, floral shirts and other tropical island wear. On Saturday, the Scouts canoed six miles on the river with a rest stop that featured a cooling swim and training and practice in the skills of swamping a canoe and deep-water re-entry into a canoe. Some Scouts and adults continued after the six-mile break and completed 10 miles on the river. Scouts attending were John Anderson, Andrew Bireta, Lawrence Chen, Alex Doktor, Eric Glogau, Ryan Glogau, Sam Goodwin, Matt Pribbenow, Stefan Kuczera, Joseph Mann, John McArthur, Drew Sheppard and Dakota Zinn. Adult leaders were Rod Zinn, Cyndy Glogau, Jarrod Mann, Chris Anderson, Sue Goodwin, Krzysztof Kuczera, Joanna Kuczera and Rich Bireta.

Boy Scout Troop 55, chartered to Westside Presbyterian Church, completed a Philmont Scout Ranch Trek June 29 to July 12. Scouts completing the 68-mile trek were Jamie Braden, Ian Gent, Alex Houston, Austin Johanning, Cody Koch, Clayton Pfeifer, Jacob Pfeifer, Connor Remboldt, Isaac Remboldt and Tyler Robbins. Adult advisers were Chuck Remboldt and John Pfeifer.

Highlights of the trek were using a burro for three days, climbing Mt. Baldy (12,441 ft.), climbing Shaefers Peak (9,413 ft.), The Tooth of Time (9,003 ft.), spar pole climbing, panning for gold, mine tour, black powder shooting, cope games, bouldering and a side hike through Hidden Valley, a visit to window rock, western lore and a chuckwagon meal. The crew also did trail building as a service project. All of the Scouts and advisers completed the requirements for The Duty to God award and the Wilderness Pledge Achievement

Eudora Cub Scout Pack 3064 will hold its “Back To The Pack” meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 25 at Eudora West building on Winchester Road. Any boys in first through fifth grades are invited to come see what Cub Scouting is about. For more information, call 542-3510.

Eudora Boy Scout Troop 64 participated in a campout on Aug.13-14. The Scouts set up their tents Friday night but were forced by rain and lightning to break camp and head to the Scout meeting area at West Elementary School in Eudora. They later overcame their “traumatic experience” by having pizza, pop and fun. After 8 a.m. reveille and breakfast Saturday, everyone headed home. Scouts and Scouters attending were Connor Bradley, Nathan Bradley, Patrick Bradley, Dakota Coble, Dylan Hopson, Nathaniel Criqui, Glenn Jackson, John Scott, Jerry Criqui, Rodney Coble, Kristen Coble and Austin Coble. Troop 64, sponsored by the Eudora Lions Club, meets at 7 p.m. on Mondays at West Elementary.

Eudora Boy Scout Troop 64 held its fall Court of Honor Aug. 14 at West Center in Eudora. Following a potluck dinner, Scoutmaster Glenn Jackson and senior patrol leader Connor Bradley opened the meeting and lead the flag salute.

Receiving rank awards were Nathan Gentleman (Eagle Gold Palm) and Dakota Coble (Second Class and First Class Scout). Simon Elwell will receive his First Class and Star Scout rank awards at the next troop meeting.

Nathan Bradley received the training award for becoming a BSA Lifeguard; Connor Bradley received a Snorkeling training award; Nathan Gentleman receive a Centennial patch and “outdoors” ribbon; and Dakota Coble received a Recruiter Centennial patch and uniform strip for enlisting a new Scout to the troop.

Merit badges awarded were: Connor Bradley, archery, climbing, carpentry and shotgun; Nathan Bradley, archery, carpentry and Indian lore; Patrick Bradley, archery, carpentry, rifle shooting and sculpture; Dakota Coble, basketry, carpentry, first aid, leatherwork and wood carving; Nathan Gentleman, archaeology, basketry, carpentry, Indian lore and orienteering; and Andrew Rome, citizenship of the world, and environmental science. Simon Elwell will receive carpentry and shotgun shooting badges at the next troop meeting.

Steven Wimmer and Nathan Gentleman were recognized for their attendance at Rotary Camp last week, and Andrew and Brian Rome, who attended the recent national Centennial Jamboree in Virginia, displayed their patches.

Troop committee chairman Roy Lytle presented certificates of appreciation to Scoutmaster Glenn Jackson, assistant Scoutmasters Damon Bradley and Jerry Criqui, and committee members Duane Gentleman, Rodney Coble, Amye Scott and John Scott. Jim Morrison and Greg Elwell will receive certificates at the next troop meeting. Unit commissioner Amye Scott presented a certificate to Mr. Lytle.
