Toronto — Andy Murray beat Roger Federer, 7-5, 7-5, to defend his Rogers Cup title on Sunday.

The 23-year-old from Scotland overcame several rain delays to become the first man to repeat as champion since Andre Agassi in 1995. He beat world No. 1 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals.

“Winning a tournament is always great,” Murray said. “This is the first time I’ve beat Roger and Rafa in the same tournament, which is probably the most pleasing thing. And I didn’t drop a set against either of them — so it’s good for the confidence for the next few weeks.”

The players last met in the Australian Open final, an easy win for Federer that gave him 16 Grand Slam titles, most in tennis.

Mason, Ohio — Seventh-ranked Kim Clijsters overcame a rain delay and three match points to rally for a 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over No. 15 Maria Sharapova in the championship match of the $2 million Cincinnati Womens’ Open on Sunday.

Titans rookie could miss 8-12 weeks

Nashville, Tenn. — Rookie Stafon Johnson has a game ball from his NFL debut. He also has had his dislocated right ankle repaired, and Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher isn’t ready to call the running back’s season over just yet.

Johnson tweeted Sunday he was fresh out of surgery. This is the running back whose senior season at Southern California was ended in September when a barbell crushed his neck and larynx, leaving him to learn how to talk again and trying to play his way into the NFL as an undrafted free agent. He promised before surgery he’ll be back better than before.

The coach was hesitant to share the extent of Johnson’s injury but said the rookie also broke his fibula. Asked if the injury means Johnson’s season will be ended by the Titans placing him on injured reserve, Fisher said that was hard to say.

“This could be eight to 12 weeks. We just don’t know,” Fisher said.

Texans RB Tate needs surgery

Houston — Houston Texans rookie running back Ben Tate will need surgery after suffering a severe ankle injury in Saturday’s preseason opener in Arizona.

Coach Gary Kubiak said Sunday that the injury is “pretty severe,” and that Tate likely will have surgery Tuesday or Wednesday.

Official’s expletives aired in stadium

Pittsburgh — Unfortunately for the officials, it was open-mic night at Heinz Field.

After the Steelers scored their first touchdown Saturday in a 23-7 exhibition victory over the Lions, referee Jeff Triplette’s field microphone picked up expletives uttered by him or one of his crew members apparently aimed at the replay official.

Unhappy that a review of quarterback Dennis Dixon’s five-yard run was ordered during a heavy rainstorm, an official was clearly heard saying, “It’s raining like this, I’ll kick his … ” followed by several expletives.

The official then added, “He’s trying to get to the Super Bowl already.”

Teenage son of Bengals ex-RB dies

Cincinnati — The teenage son of former Cincinnati Bengals running back Ickey Woods has died, days after he collapsed from an asthma attack.

School officials say 16-year-old Elbert Jovante Woods died Saturday night at a Cincinnati hospital. The teen was practicing with his varsity football team Wednesday morning. He collapsed later that day and was taken to the hospital.

Lance Stephenson arrested

New York — Former Coney Island basketball standout Lance Stephenson, who was a second-round pick of the Indiana Pacers in the 2010 NBA Draft, was arrested Sunday morning for allegedly pushing his girlfriend down a flight of stairs.

Stephenson, 19, who played high school ball at Brooklyn’s Lincoln High School before attending the University of Cincinnati one year, was charged with assault, the New York Post reported.

Jasmine Williams, 21, with whom Stephenson has a child, told police Stephenson pushed her down the stairs and that she hit her head during the fall. She was taken to Coney Island hospital for treatment of head and neck injuries. Stephenson was arrested at the scene.

Charlotte, N.C. — Danielle Kang’s four-foot putt on the next-to-last hole in the U.S. Women’s Amateur on Sunday gave her a 2-and-1 match-play victory over Jessica Korda.

Haas tops at Nationwide event

Springfield, Mo. — Hunter Haas won for the first time in four years, shooting a 7-under 65 (262 total) Sunday to take the Nationwide Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship.

Former Kansas University golfer Gary Woodland finished with a final-round 70 (276 total) and took home $3,625 in earnings.

U.S. routs France, 86-55

New York — Even the old guy found something new in the young Americans’ debut.

“First time I’ve been in the Garden and the people have been cheering for me,” Chauncey Billups said.

Billups scored 17 points, nine in an early third-quarter flurry that broke open the game, and the United States beat France, 86-55, on Sunday in its only home exhibition before the world championships.

The Americans trimmed their roster to 13 earlier Sunday when they cut Jeff Green and JaVale McGee.

The Americans open the world championships on Aug. 28 against Croatia in Istanbul, Turkey.

Haslem arrested for marijuana

Miami — Heat forward Udonis Haslem was arrested Sunday for possession of marijuana following a traffic stop in Miami-Dade County.

Haslem, 30, was stopped in a 2008 Mercedes around 3:05 p.m. going eastbound on the Gratigny Parkway because of speeding, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said.

According to Miami-Dade court records, Haslem was charged with possessing more than 20 grams of marijuana, a third-degree felony which could bring maximum punishments of a $5,000 fine and a five-year prison sentence. Haslem was released on bond shortly after 10 p.m.

Group wants all-star game moved

Washington — Sunday’s game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Washington Nationals was briefly interrupted by protesters urging commissioner Bud Selig to move the 2011 All-Star Game from Phoenix because of Arizona’s new immigration legislation.

A man emerged from the left-field stands in the fifth inning and ran into short right field after Washington pitcher Stephen Strasburg grounded to short for the first out.
