Royals trade Guillen to Giants

? The San Francisco Giants made another move for the stretch run Friday, acquiring veteran outfielder Jose Guillen and cash considerations from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for a player to be named later and cash considerations.

The Giants haven’t been to the playoffs since 2003 and were in the NL wild-card chase until mid-September last season. Getting over the hump in 2010 to end the six-year drought is the franchise’s top priority.

The Royals announced the deal hours before the Giants hosted the first-place Padres in an NL West showdown at AT&T Park. San Diego held a 2 1/2-game division lead heading into the weekend series.

Braves’ Jones to attempt comeback

Atlanta — Chipper Jones said Friday he will report to spring training next year with the Braves as he attempts a comeback from major knee surgery.

Jones, speaking for the first time since the team announced he tore his left ACL and will miss the rest of the season, said he will have surgery on the knee today.

Pelini: QB Martinez still with Huskers

Lincoln, Neb. — Nebraska coach Bo Pelini says quarterback Taylor Martinez is still with the team.

Martinez practiced with the Cornhuskers on Friday after missing Thursday’s workout. Pelini said Martinez’s absence was excused and that the coaching staff knew exactly where he was.

Texas Tech receiver Zouzalik has surgery

Lubbock, Texas — Texas Tech receiver and punt return specialist Austin Zouzalik could miss the Red Raiders opening game as he recovers from an emergency appendectomy.

Team spokesman Blayne Beal said Friday that Zouzalik had the surgery early Thursday. Zouzalik could be out as long as a month. The Red Raiders open the season against SMU on Sept. 5.

Sean Sutton gets probation in drug case

Stillwater, Okla. — Apologizing for a series of “terrible mistakes,” former Oklahoma State coach Sean Sutton was sentenced Friday to three years of probation after pleading guilty to illegally obtaining prescription drugs.

Sutton agreed to testify against two people who allegedly supplied him with adderall, clonazepam and oxycodone as part of a plea agreement covering four felony counts tied to his February arrest. He was also ordered to pay more than $2,850 in fines, perform 100 hours of community service in the next year and complete more drug rehabilitation treatment.

Chargers’ Merriman signs tender, reports

San Diego — Shawne Merriman signed his $3,269,000, one-year tender with the San Diego Chargers on Friday, admitting his two-week holdout didn’t accomplish anything.

The outside linebacker won’t play in tonight’s exhibition opener against Chicago, but coach Norv Turner expects him to be ready by the following weekend.

Brooklyn, Mich. — After finally finding out that he’ll be driving next season for Red Bull Racing, Kasey Kahne turned in an impressive performance for his current team Friday, with a lap of 187.183 mph to win the pole position for Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Michigan International Speedway.

Bravo signs with K.C

Kansas City, Mo. — Omar Bravo has become the latest Mexican star to join Major League Soccer, signing with the Kansas City Wizards as a designated player not subject to the league’s salary budget.

Under a loan agreement announced Friday involving the Wizards, MLS and Chivas, Bravo will remain with his Guadalajara club through the Mexican Apertura fall season and then join Kansas City for the 2011 preseason.
