Preliminary hearing set for late August for suspect in shooting outside the Exchange apartments

A Lawrence man accused of shooting six people Aug. 1 outside a south Lawrence apartment faces a preliminary hearing later this month.

During a court appearance Wednesday morning, Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone set an Aug. 27 hearing for 28-year-old Sinh Lavongsa, who faces one count of attempted second-degree murder and five counts of aggravated battery.

Police and prosecutors accuse Lavongsa of firing a handgun at a man outside at the Exchange apartment complex, 3100 Ousdahl Road. But they say he missed initially and struck five other people.

Prosecutors have not released any additional details about circumstances that night. Lawrence police arrested Lavongsa two days later, after officers served a search warrant at a residence in the Gaslight Village Mobile Home Park, 1900 W. 31st St. The mobile home park is north across 31st Street from The Exchange.
