Preparations begin for next tax season

AARP needs tax aide volunteers who are interested in providing free income tax preparation and electronic filing services to needy Lawrence residents for the next tax season. Volunteers will receive all necessary training in January 2011 on use of the IRS-provided computer program, new tax law changes and state tax preparation. Immediate needs

• The Douglas County AIDS Project is looking for volunteers to help out in the office serving as a receptionist volunteer. Duties include answering phones, greeting visitors, clerical work and working on informational displays. Volunteers must be mature and responsible, and commit to working a regular weekly shift for at least a month.

DCAP is also looking for a volunteer to assist with the planning and implementation of its upcoming Art Auction. Duties would include photographing artwork and then posting the art onto the Web throughout September and October. • The Lied Center of Kansas is looking for volunteer ushers for the upcoming fall semester. Duties include greeting patrons, handing out programs, tearing tickets and assisting patrons with other seating needs. Ushers are typically needed for events in the evenings. • The city of Lawrence is seeking volunteers for its second annual Bicycle and Pedestrian Count. Counts will be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 15, a Wednesday, and noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 18, a Saturday. Volunteers will manually count bicyclists and pedestrians at several locations across the city, and will need to attend a mandatory training session prior to their scheduled count day. Training sessions will be from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 13 or 11 a.m. to noon Sept. 14 at the City Commission Room in Lawrence City Hall, 6 E. Sixth St.
