25 years ago: More than $1 million of marijuana confiscated in raids

Local authorities said that recent raids on marijuana fields had netted more than $1 million worth of the drug. No arrests had been made as a result of any of the raids, but the district attorney’s office pointed out the importance of confiscation as it “hit the dealer in the pocketbook.” Raids conducted on July 19 near Douglas County State Lake northeast of Baldwin and July 24 on the banks of the Kansas River about three miles northwest of Lawrence yielded an estimated $1.3 million in nearly mature marijuana, which KBI officials called a high-grade Columbian variety. Jefferson County officials had raided a site directly across from the location of the July 24 raid, seizing about $100,000 worth of marijuana.
