Louisville, Ky ? An ex-husband of a woman accused of demanding millions from Rick Pitino to keep quiet about their one-night stand has told jurors that his former wife turned down a plea deal because she wanted revenge.

Randy Wise testified Monday that Karen Cunagin Sypher said in the summer of 2009, “I’m going down. I’m going to take Pitino with me.” Wise said Sypher made the comments about two months after she had been charged.

Sypher has pleaded not guilty to extortion, retaliating against a witness and lying to the FBI.

Ex-UCLA star Edney joins staff

Los Angeles — Tyus Edney is returning to UCLA. He is joining the Bruins as director of men’s basketball operations. Coach Ben Howland announced the hiring on Monday.

Kentucky’s Dodson won’t play

Lexington, Ky. — Kentucky coach John Calipari says junior guard Darnell Dodson will not play for the Wildcats this season.

Calipari posted on his Facebook page Sunday night that while Dodson is academically eligible, he won’t be with the team when it travels to Canada for a series of exhibition games later this month. Calipari gave no reason behind the decision.

Chisox don’t back Guillen

Chicago — The Chicago White Sox backed away from their manager Monday, publicly disagreeing with Ozzie Guillen’s assertion that Asian players are given privileges in the United States that Latinos are not afforded.

In his latest rant, the outspoken Guillen also said Sunday he’s the “only one” in baseball teaching young players from Latin America to stay away from performance-enhancing drugs and that Major League Baseball doesn’t care about that.

Auburn slugger signs with K.C.

Auburn, Ala. — Auburn University slugger Brian Fletcher has signed with the Kansas City Royals, opting to skip his senior season.

Fletcher, an 18th round selection by Kansas City, signed over the weekend and has been assigned to Class A Burlington.

Hart, Brewers agree to extension

Milwaukee — Corey Hart now has a long-term future with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Brewers agreed Monday to a $26.5 million, three-year contract extension through 2013, rewarding the outfielder for a turnaround season that included a trip to the All-Star game.

USADA offering deals to riders

Austin, Texas — Lance Armstrong’s attorneys say the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency is offering cyclists a “sweetheart deal” if they testify or provide evidence that the seven-time Tour de France winner cheated by doping.

If those riders have been caught doping, the deal from USADA could result in a reduced ban from competition and other incentives, attorney Tim Herman told The Associated Press on Monday.

Irsay won’t let Peyton go

Anderson, Ind. — Jim Irsay won’t let Peyton Manning walk away from the Colts next season — no matter the cost.

Indy’s owner reiterated Monday that he intends to make Manning the NFL’s highest-paid player even if it takes the prohibitive franchise tag to keep the only four-time MVP in league history in blue and white.

“The bottom line is we’ll get something done and when it happens just depends,” Irsay said during the Colts’ first training camp practice. “I said he’d be the highest-paid player and he may already be if we go with the tag. I’d love to see him be here and break all those records as a Colt.”

Cowboys’ Bryant still catching

San Antonio — Dez Bryant is still catching a few balls despite that bulky protective boot on his right foot.

Bryant caught a few light tosses from receivers coach Ray Sherman while standing on the sideline as practice got started Monday. Once drills got under way, the Dallas Cowboys’ first-round pick was an observer watching with Sherman or another coach while the offense went through its plays.

Coach Wade Phillips says it’s still too early to determine how quickly Bryant could be back after sustaining a high right ankle sprain Friday.

Suh still holding out

Allen Park, Mich. — Ndamukong Suh missed his third straight day of practice Monday with the Detroit Lions.

Coach Jim Schwartz said it’s disappointing Suh has missed some opportunities in training camp that are gone forever.

Haynesworth still doesn’t pass

Ashburn, Va. — Albert Haynesworth still hasn’t passed the Washington Redskins’ conditioning test.

The two-time All-Pro defensive tackle started to take the test Monday morning, but he stopped after three back-and-forth sprints because he again felt irritation in his left knee.

A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that first-round draft pick Jermaine Gresham has agreed to a contract with the Cincinnati Bengals.

The person spoke Monday night on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the deal with the tight end.

• First-round draft pick Dan Williams was headed up the hill from Phoenix to training camp after agreeing to terms Friday on a five-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals.

• The Jacksonville Jaguars and first-round draft pick Tyson Alualu have finally agreed on a five-year contract worth $28 million, ending the defensive tackle’s brief holdout and getting him on his way to training camp.

• The Indianapolis Colts have agreed to a five-year deal with first-round draft pick Jerry Hughes. The agent for the defensive end from TCU confirmed the deal through an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Former Lions CB dies

Allen Park, Mich. — Former Detroit Lions cornerback James Hunter has died.

The team says he died Monday from an apparent heart attack at age 56.

Hunter played for coach Eddie Robinson at Grambling State and was from Silsbee, Texas.

Indianapolis — IndyCar officials fined star Helio Castroneves $60,000 and placed him on probation for the remainder of the year following his actions at the July 25 race in Edmonton.
