City commission agenda for April 20

Bottom line

City commissioners will be asked to approve almost $1.9 million for fire truck purchases. The fire department is seeking purchase a new fire engine for $695,535 and a new 100-foot ladder truck for $1,183,923. Both pieces of equipment would be from Pierce Manufacturing.

Background

City staff members are recommending using $1 million from the city’s new infrastructure sales tax that began last year. The tax approved by voters included a provision for purchasing fire equipment. The remainder of the money will come from $750,000 in general obligation bonds, about $80,000 from equipment reserve funds, and a $50,000 contribution from Kansas University’s Housing Department, which operates several dorms that would need to be served by the ladder truck.
