Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center will highlight accomplishments, honor supporters and look forward to the future during next week’s annual Pioneer Celebration.

Even though the organization has lost $1.4 million to budget cuts since 2007.

“Under Siege and Overachieving” is the theme for this year’s event, set for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Oread, 1200 Oread Ave.

About 150 people are expected to fill the hotel’s Hancock Ballroom, as community leaders — including Lawrence public schools Superintendent Rick Doll, Douglas County Sheriff Ken McGovern and Cottonwood Inc. CEO Sharon Spratt — share their experiences with Bert Nash, which provides behavioral health services throughout the area.

“We’re still continuing to press forward and maintain our programs and services as best we can,” said Cindy Hart, development director at Bert Nash.

The organization also will present several awards during the celebration, which is open to the public:

• Barbara Huppee, executive director of the Lawrence Housing Authority, will receive a Pioneer Award, honoring her agency’s partnerships with Bert Nash to help people with persistent mental illness secure safe and comfortable housing.

• Pam Weigand, director of youth services for Douglas County, also will receive a Pioneer Award, recognizing her work as an advocate for juvenile offenders who need mental health services.

• Mike McGrew, chairman and CEO of McGrew Real Estate, will receive the Lyn Smith Award for Distinguished Service. He’s been a member of Bert Nash’s board of directors since 2001, including service as secretary-treasurer in 2003 and chairman in 2005.

• Cynthia Walters, a human resources specialist at Bert Nash, will receive the Sandra Shaw Spirit Award, given annually to an outstanding member of the organization.
