Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical workers investigated a gas line break around noon Tuesday in the 1000 block of New York Street, but a spokesman for Black Hills Energy said everything was safe.

Curt Floerchinger, a Black Hills spokesman, said a construction crew in the area struck a gas line. Crews shut off the gas line about 1 p.m. and one resident in the block will be without natural gas probably until Wednesday, he said.

“It’s all safe, and they are going to go in and make repairs,” Floerchinger said.

Doug Green, a fire and medical division chief, said the construction crew hit a feeder line to a house. Fire and medical crews cleared the area after 1 p.m.

Nancy DeGarmo, principal at New York School, 936 N.Y., said the school took students off the playground and brought them into the building. She said firefighters checked the inside of the school building and determined it was safe.

The gas line break was south of 10th and New York streets.

Firefighters went house to house in the 1000 block of New York Street to check air-quality levels in homes.
