Canine concern

To the editor:

A ban on dog owners bringing their pets to the Lawrence Farmers’ Market was recently proposed. However, because “there was a real significant voice from the community that they want to have the option of bringing their dogs to the market,” the proposal was backed away from.

I don’t think the farmers’ market organization or pet owners have considered everything in this decision. Incidents have happened in this past year where patrons to the farmers’ market have tripped over dog leashes attached to the dogs and owners. It is usually because the owners are not paying attention because they are talking to vendors or to their friends who sometimes also have dogs.

A lot of attendees are elderly who can’t walk very well or can’t see those leashes. Who is responsible for injuries or damages if someone does fall because of this or from being bitten by a dog on a leash?

Maybe a new enclosed dog park in the city where they could all meet would be a much safer option.
