Five city players in all-star game

There’ll be no shortage of city players in this summer’s Kansas City Metro All-Star Football Game.

Four outgoing seniors from Free State High and one from Lawrence High will participate in the June 17 contest at Shawnee Mission North District Stadium.

Firebirds selected for the Kansas team are center Michael Lisher, linebacker Kirk Resseguie, wide receiver Connor Stremel and quarterback Camren Torneden. Linebacker Taylor Coleman will represent the Lions.

Free State’s Bob Lisher will be head coach of the Kansas squad and will have two staffers with him — defensive coordinator Brett Oberzan and wide-receivers coach Adam Barmann.

“We’ve had quite a few guys in the past play in this game,” Lisher said, “and they want to keep this honor going. When you put the Kansas metro area and the Missouri metro area against each other, it’s a pretty competitive football game.”

This is the fourth time Lisher has been on the Kansas coaching staff. Previously, Lisher served as defensive-line coach, defensive coordinator and offensive coordinator.

The focus, however, will be on the players, many of whom will be participating in their final organized football game.

“They all look forward to playing in this game because they get to go against the best, and they all want to see how they stack up,” Lisher said.

Summer Camps: Lawrence High Youth Football Camp will be June 28-July 1 for players entering grades 3-8. It will run 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Free State Youth Football Camp for linemen will be June 22-24, with the camp for quarterbacks, wide receivers and defensive backs July 6-8. Both sessions will run 9:30-11:30 a.m.

Registration forms for the LHS and FSHS camps are at city elementary and junior high schools.
