Brownback reacts to Justice Stevens’ retirement

? U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., who will likely vote on whoever President Obama nominates to the U.S. Supreme Court to replace retiring Justice John Paul Stevens, offered some advice Friday.

In a statement, Brownback thanked Stevens for his service on the court, and urged Obama “to nominate a replacement who will be faithful to the United States Constitution, and not a political ideology.”

He said he hoped Obama would consult with senators from both political parties before selecting a nominee.

Last year, both Brownback and U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan., voted against the nomination of Obama’s selection of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. She was confirmed on a 68-31 vote with nine Republicans joining a unanimous Democratic caucus.
