A gift of time can be more important — and perhaps even more meaningful — than a gift of money.

It’s understandable that, in the current economy, many people have had to reduce their monetary gifts to various social service agencies, but the annual Day of Caring is an opportunity for local residents to give the precious gift of time.

The United Way of Douglas County’s Roger Hill Volunteer Center is seeking additional volunteers for the April 24 event. There are options to match about any talent, including gardening, helping at the library book sale or performing chores that local social services agencies just haven’t gotten around to.

Many businesses and clubs volunteer in groups, but individuals volunteer also are welcome. The event kicks off with a 9 a.m. breakfast at Free State High School, 4700 Overland Drive. Volunteers can contact the volunteer center at 865-5030 or programs@rhvc.org to sign up for the event.

Whether or not you’ve supported local agencies with a financial gift, there’s something special about rolling up your sleeves and providing some hands-on help.
