Power restored to most Douglas County customers, schools after storm

After up to 2,400 customers were without power earlier Friday after the morning thunderstorm, crews have restored power to most of the county as of 12:55 p.m., according to Westar Energy’s Web site.

The outages were mainly in areas north of Sixth and Iowa streets and southwest of Lawrence up until just after noon Friday.

Julie Boyle, a Lawrence public schools spokeswoman, said the district office, 110 McDonald Drive, and Deerfield School, 101 Lawrence Ave., and Wakarusa Valley School southwest of Lawrence were also without power earlier. She said at 12:25 p.m. the power had been restored to the schools and district office

Nick Bundy, a Westar spokesman, said most of the outages were due to a tree falling onto a power line and a piece of equipment failing due to the weather. It took crews about an hour to restore power to most of the county.
