Free State soccer falls to SM South, 2-1

? Free State High’s soccer team no longer is unscored-upon, and the Firebirds are undefeated no more.

Shawnee Mission South scored two second-half goals to beat FSHS, 2-1, on Thursday. In its first five games, Free State hadn’t surrendered a goal.

“We came a bit flat and struggled with the pace of the game early on,” Free State coach Jason Pendleton said.

Diego Gonzalez scored the Firebirds’ lone goal, in the first half.

“But we gave that up early in the second with poor decision-making on the flank,” Pendleton said.

The Firebirds (5-1) will play host to Topeka High on Saturday.

Game time is 10 a.m.
