From the Lawrence Daily World for Sept. 25, 1909: Gov. W.R. Stubbs will call a local meeting to explain to citizens why state taxes are higher and how the money to pay them will be used. Many have complained about the higher rates. . . . A well-known Grant Township farmer was arrested this morning, charged with stealing wheat and feed from the Sarah Robinson place in Grant Township. The man was greatly surprised and pleaded innocence. . . . Lawrence Day at the county fair drew record crowds and the closing days will feature races with some of the finest horses in the entire region. There also will be a football game between a Haskell team and the Independence Business School. . . . Chancellor Strong in his opening speech for the fall semester today said KU students are too extravagant, spend too much money and fail to save for their futures. He said parents who work so hard on behalf of their children deserve better economy from the young people, who “too often waste surprising amounts of money on worthless undertakings.”
