Lawrence police arrest suspect in string of burglaries

Police have arrested a 34-year-old Lawrence man suspected in a string of burglaries.

Officers obtained a search warrant Thursday for the home of Johny Jean-Baptiste. There, they found stolen property that police say connect him to seven aggravated burglaries that date back to early August.

The burglaries occurred at the 1500 block of Eddingham Drive, the 1900 block of Stewart Avenue, the 2000 block of Stratford Road, and the 1700 blocks of West 19th and 20th Terrace.

Sgt. Bill Cory says police now are working to find the owners of the stolen property.

“We’ve located the seven cases and are in the process of trying to contact those victims to try and get their property returned to them,” Sgt. Cory says. “If there’s other property in there that doesn’t belong to any of those seven victims, we’ll have to continue our investigation, which is still ongoing at this time.”

Jean-Baptiste appeared Thursday in Douglas County District Court, where he is charged with one count of aggravated battery and two counts of theft. He remains in custody in the Douglas County Jail. The judge set his bond at $20,000.
