One more twist here or one fewer wobble there and the Free State High gymnastics team might have reached triple digits.

Instead, the Firebirds had to settle for another dominating performance.

Tuesday at FSHS, the Firebirds won a three-team meet, finishing ahead of Shawnee Mission North and Lawrence High and just behind the 100-point mark.

“You always want to break the century mark,” said Free State coach Kathy Johnson, whose team won the meet with a score of 99.95. “This early in the season, that shows that you’re headed in the right direction.”

Free State junior Kelcy Bowers and senior Drue Davis each won two events, and Bowers won the all-around individual title, as well.

The feat marked the second time in the past week that Bowers had won an all-around title, but the story of the night was the strong showing from Davis, who has been hampered by a shoulder injury in the early going.

“Drue competed in the all-around for the first time this year,” Johnson said. “She did a brand-new vault skill, and she got through her routine on bars. She’s not quite there yet, but hopefully she’ll keep improving at each meet.”

Davis won the vault (9.0) and floor routine (9.1) and also took second in the balance beam (8.4) and sixth on the bars (6.9). That led her to a second-place finish in the all-around (33.4) to Bowers (34.1), who was first on the bars (8.4) and beam (8.55), second in the vault (8.6) and third in the floor routine (8.55).

Junior Aly Frydman also turned in a solid night, finishing second on the floor (8.6) and fourth on the beam (8.0) and sixth in the vault (8.4). Her floor routine included a new skill, an Arabian Salto, which raised her degree of difficulty.

All in all, it was another good night for the Firebirds and another rough night for the Lions, who were without senior Maria Carvajal yet again. Fellow senior Caitlin Haig delivered one of the best vaults of her career and would have placed seventh with an 8.3.

The Firebirds and Lions will return to action Saturday at FSHS for the Free State Invitational.
