Austin, Texas — Colt McCoy and Texas gained a measure of revenge against Texas Tech and its new prolific passer.

McCoy threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Dan Buckner in the fourth quarter that gave the Longhorns some room to work, and Texas beat the Red Raiders, 34-24, Saturday night.

McCoy’s three-yard TD to Buckner with nine minutes left put Texas ahead 31-17, but it was an otherwise shaky outing for last season’s runner-up for the Heisman Trophy.

McCoy finished with 205 yards and two interceptions on 24-of-34 passing for the Longhorns (3-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12).

First-year starter Taylor Potts passed for 420 yards and three touchdowns for Texas Tech (2-1, 0-1), but fumbled on a sack by Sergio Kindle to set up McCoy’s touchdown pass.

Texas Tech beat the Longhorns, 39-33, last season behind Graham Harrell and star receiver Michael Crabtree, a loss that cost the Longhorns a shot at the national title.

Unlike last season, when the Red Raiders jumped to a big early lead, the fireworks didn’t really start until the second half. The defenses didn’t let McCoy and Potts get rolling early.

Jordan Shipley’s 46-yard punt return in the first quarter for Texas was the only time either team reached the end zone in the first half that ended 10-3.

Shipley caught the ball in the middle of the field, dashed straight ahead, then broke to his right and outran punter Donnie Carona to the corner. His momentum took him all the way to the massive live Longhorn mascot Bevo, and he startled the big fella.

No. 13 Virginia Tech 16, No. 19 Nebraska 15

Blacksburg, Va. — Tyrod Taylor dodged several defenders and then rifled an 11-yard touchdown pass to Dyrell Roberts with 21 seconds left, rallying Virginia Tech over Nebraska.

Taylor, known for his running more than his passing, completed two big, late throws for the Hokies.

Taylor first hit Danny Coale for 80 yards down the right sideline with 1:11 left, setting the ball up at the Nebraska three, where Coale was forced out of bounds. After two unencouraging plays, Taylor scrambled around for what seemed like a minute before connecting with Roberts.

The victory was the 32nd in a row for Virginia Tech at home against nonconference opponents.

No. 12 Oklahoma 45, Tulsa 0

Norman, Okla. — Landry Jones set a school record with six touchdown passes, and Oklahoma recorded its second straight shutout after Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford was injured, beating Tulsa on Saturday for its 26th straight home victory.

The Sooners (2-1) broke the school record for consecutive home wins by holding opponents scoreless in back-to-back games.

No. 16 Oklahoma State 41, Rice 24

Stillwater, Okla. — Zac Robinson rushed for one touchdown and threw for two others — both to Dez Bryant.

Iowa State 34, Kent State 14

Kent, Ohio — Austen Arnaud ran for two touchdowns and threw for another, helping Iowa State break its 17-game road losing streak.

The victory was the Cyclones’ first road win since defeating Texas A&M in 2005.

Texas A&M 38, Utah State 30

College Station, Texas — Jerrod Johnson threw three of his four touchdown passes to freshman Uzoma Nwachukwu.

Connecticut 30, Baylor 22

Waco, Texas — Andre Dixon ran for 149 yards and three touchdowns, and Jordan Todman ran for 103 yards for Connecticut.

Colorado 24, Wyoming 0

Boulder, Colo. — Cody Hawkins directed four scoring drives, and Rodney Stewart carried 32 times for 127 yards and a two touchdowns.

Missouri 52, Furman 12

Columbia, Mo. — Blaine Gabbert threw for three touchdowns and ran for another, and Missouri scored six consecutive touchdowns against Furman.

UCLA 23, Kansas State 9

Los Angeles — Johnathan Franklin rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, and UCLA dropped Kansas State.

It was the second straight week the Wildcats lost.

K-State fell to 1-2 on the season.
