A van filled with explosives and driven by a suicide commando ran a hail of gunfire and blew up a yeard frm the U.S. Embassy annex outside east Beirut. It severely damaged the building and killed 23 people, two of them Americans. U.S. and British ambassadors were hurt, but not seriously.

So far, Kansas University officials were not pleased with offers Northwest Central Pipeline had made in response to a request to get cheap natural gas to the campus.

A Kansas Board of Regents committee approved recommendations to eliminate eight degree programs at Kansas University and other regents institutions. The votes on all the issues were unanimous in the face of growing budget deficits.

Problems continued with the Wakarusa Bridge replacement project. In its 11th month, the project was about three months behind schedule and $135,000 over the original estimate. All traffic was being rerouted around the bridge.

Ralph Wedd, who retired the past summer after 16 years as a coach and teacher at South Junior High, died after a heart attack while working as a crop adjuster near Wayne, Neb. He was 65.
