The iconic, brightly painted limo that local non-profit Van Go has used since 1998 will soon be leaving Lawrence.

The limo was sold for $2,500 to a non-profit in San Francisco that works with disabled adults. That organization has made a down payment on the limo, but Lynne Green, executive director of Van Go, said the final date that the limo will be shipped west is still up in the air.

Green’s cousin drove the limo from New York City to Lawrence in 1998 when the non-profit was only a few years old.

Despite the limo’s long history in Lawrence, Green said that it required too much upkeep and maintenance and that Van Go had “grown up.”

“It has a lot to do with our identity, but with the renovation and expansion of our facilities, we became a little less funky,” Green said. “It’s not as much about our present as it is our past.”

Van Go provides after-school and summer job training to high-needs and under-served youth from ages 14 to 21. The limo was used to pick up and drop off students and for special excursions. Now, and perhaps more appropriately, Van Go will use vans for transporting the students.
