Police made an arrest Friday night in connection with a leaving-the-scene vehicle accident with some help from the suspect’s OnStar navigation system.

An Emporia man reported at about 11:20 p.m. his Chevy Malibu had been rear-ended near the intersection of Ninth and Iowa streets. The man, who was not injured in the accident, could not provide a description of the suspect vehicle.

Several minutes later, Douglas County dispatch received a call from OnStar advising the airbags had been deployed on a Saturn Ion in Lawrence. When OnStar attempted to contact the driver, the service received no answer. Using the vehicle’s GPS system, OnStar tracked the vehicle’s location and passed the information to emergency dispatch and Lawrence Police. Lawrence Police tracked down the suspect vehicle at 11:55 p.m. in the 700 block of Connecticut.

“Because of the GPS relaying constantly the location of that vehicle, our officers were able to stop it,” said Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl.

The suspect, a 46-year-old Blue Springs, Mo., man, was arrested on charges of driving while impaired, failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident and no proof of insurance.

The suspect did not suffer any serious injuries.
