Baldwin City ? Eudora High beat its rival for the second straight year and won the Class 4A district football crown Thursday.

In fact, the Cardinals (7-2) rolled over Baldwin (2-7), winning, 47-0, at Liston Stadium. The Cardinals went 3-0 in district play.

“I’m loving this right now,” Eudora senior Evan Cleveland said. “This was a fantastic win. This is a great rivalry, and it feels so great to come out and get the win.”

Eudora scored touchdowns on five of its six possessions in the first half. The other score was a fumble recovery in the Bulldogs’ end zone.

Cardinals’ sophomore tailback Chris Pyle scored three touchdowns Thursday night. He joined junior Boomer Mays in helping the Cardinals rack up 245 yards on the ground.

Cleveland added to the mix and scored the first touchdown on the ground. Cleveland also threw a pair of long touchdown passes to wide-open receivers.

“When you can run the ball as well as we did, it will open our passing game,” Eudora coach Gregg Webb said. “Our offensive line has gotten better, too. We also have some skill kids that can run and catch it. Put all of that together, and we were able to move the ball.”

Baldwin’s offense struggled all night long, as it only managed one first down in the first half and three for the game. A week ago, the Bulldogs rushed for 421 yards, but were contained to just 60 yards.

“Our defense played well enough to give our offense enough chances to score,” Webb said. “Our defensive ends squeezed everything back inside, and that really gave them trouble. I kind of put the burden on our defensive ends tonight. Then our linebackers filled the gaps nicely.”

Eudora will host De Soto at 7 p.m. Tuesday, while Baldwin will travel to Roeland Park Bishop Miege for its bi-district contest.

Perry-Lecompton 55, Santa Fe Trail 2

Perry — Sophomore quarterback Jeremy Immenschuh was perfect Thursday for Perry.

Immenschuh attempted just four passes, but he completed all four — for touchdowns, no less — for 131 yards for the Kaws.

Brad Phillips had three catches for 93 yards and three TD receptions. He also had 13 rushes for 91 yards and another score for Perry (2-7 overall, 1-2 district) against SFT (0-9, 0-3).

Kansas City Ward 14, Tonganoxie 7

Kansas City, Kan. — A few mistakes on a slow and sloppy muddy field cost Tonganoxie from closing its football season in the victory column.

Although the Chieftains took an early first-quarter lead, they couldn’t find the end zone the rest of the evening at Dorney Field.

A fumble recovery by THS senior lineman Dane Gonser gave Tonganoxie (5-4) a short field with 3:51 remaining in the first quarter.

Six seconds later, Tonganoxie quarterback hit a wide-open Justin Jacobs down the right sideline on first down for a 38-yard score on the team’s third possession.

But that was the last time THS reached the end zone as Ward (6-3) didn’t even allow the visiting Chieftains in the red zone on their next seven possessions.

Early in the second quarter, Tonganoxie forced Ward to punt, but was flagged for roughing the kicker, and the Cyclones turned the second chance into a scoring drive that tied the game.

On the Chieftains’ next drive, Carlisle was picked off (his first of three interceptions), and Ward responded with a 10-play, 74-yard drive that ate up most of the remaining first-half clock.

Tonganoxie’s defense shut out the Cyclones in the second half.

Senior linebacker Jeremie Maus blitzed early and often to cause trouble in Ward’s backfield, and teammates Jonas Myers, Ian McClellan, D.J. Lindsay, Jacobs and Gonser also tackled for losses in the game.

Roeland Park Miege 29, De Soto 15

De Soto — De Soto committed four turnovers and lost the field-position battle, and Miege claimed the district championship.

Miege struck first, scoring on a Bobby Germinder three-yard run late in the first quarter. De Soto’s defense then stiffened and forced the Stags to punt on their next possession, but De Soto fumbled the snap at its own 14-yard line.

Miege, though, fumbled the ball right back to De Soto. But two plays later, De Soto fumbled the ball again at its own 10-yard line, and Miege’s Justin McCay capped the short-field drive with an eight-yard touchdown pass from Max Shortell. The Stags converted on the two-point conversion, and De Soto was in a 15-point hole midway through the second quarter.

But De Soto’s Jeff Bowen returned the ensuing kick 70 yards, and four plays later, Dylan Burford scored from 14-yards out to cut the lead to eight.

De Soto carried that momentum into the second half, and on the second play of the third quarter, Burford busted up the middle, then cut back left and sprinted down the sideline for a 54-yard touchdown.

Quarterback Daniel Peterson then connected with Jon Hastings on a slant in the end zone on the two-point conversion, and De Soto had drawn even at 15.

But the De Soto offense had trouble moving the ball after that, and another short field for Miege culminated in a McCay three-yard touchdown run late in the third.

The Wildcats then went to the air, but an interception gave Miege another short field, and Germinder finished the drive with a three-yard run early in the fourth. De Soto drove to the Stags’ 25-yard line, but another fumbled snap gave Miege the ball back, and the Stags ran out the clock.

De Soto (4-5) will play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Eudora in the first round of the playoffs. Miege (7-2) will host Baldwin at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
