Emergency crews respond to trailer fire, rescue animals

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical responded Friday evening to a structure fire at Harper Woods and Riverside Mobile Home Community, 2200 Harper St.

Crews were dispatched to the scene just before 7 p.m. Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Battalion Chief Rob Kort said the resident whose home caught fire was not in the residence when the fire started. The resident returned home after a neighbor had called, alerting them to the situation.

The fire started in the back bedroom of the trailer. When crews first arrived on the scene they observed thick smoke coming from the back of the trailer. Crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly, saving the rest of the trailer from fire damage.

Kort said crews were also able to rescue the resident’s pets, which included three dogs and a rabbit.

The bedroom was the only room to sustain fire damage, but the rest of the residence was filled with smoke, making it temporarily unlivable.

The Red Cross was on scene to provide relief for the resident. The Lawrence Humane Society was also contacted in regard to housing the animals for the night.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
