Drainage District asks for permission to stabilize Kansas River bank

The Douglas County Kaw Drainage District is asking permission to proceed with a project to stabilize the bank of the Kansas River northwest of Lawrence.

Federal and state officials are taking public comments on the project until Nov. 19.

The drainage district wants to place large rocks at the edge of the southern bank to keep it from eroding. It involves about a 1-mile section that is 6.5 miles west of the Bowersock Dam.

“They are basically trying to protect farmland by these proposed activities,” said Katherine Dunn, a regulatory specialist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The public can submit comments to Dunn at the corps Kansas City Field Office, 700 Federal Building, 601 E. 12th St., Kansas City, Mo., 64106-2896, by phone at 816-389-3656, fax at 816-389-2032 or e-mail, katherine.r.dunn@usace.army.mil.
