Veritas football set for showdown with unbeaten Sunrise Christian

Undefeated Veritas Christian will play also unbeaten Sunrise Christian Academy in a battle for the top seed in the KCAA tonight at 7.

“This is going to be a good, toe-to-toe battle, but we’re definitely the underdog going into this,” said Doug Bennett, Veritas coach. “We’ve just got to do our best.”

One of Lawrence’s two eight-man football teams, Veritas so far has had a successful season, most recently crushing St. Mary’s Academy, 44-20, last week.

“It’s always your goal to win every one, but, realistically, we thought we’d have some hold ups,” Bennett said. “Our guys took ownership of this team starting this summer in the weight room. They’ve done exactly what the coaches have asked them to do.”

But the Sunrise Buffaloes also are hoping to continue their undefeated season, and to play in the championship game this Saturday.

“They’re big, they’re strong, they’re athletic — everything you’d want to see in a football team,” Bennett said. “We expected this to be a tough game from the beginning of the season.”

Tonight’s game will be at 5500 E 45th St. N, in Bel Aire, Kan.
