100 years ago: Turkeys should be plentiful for holidays

From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 25, 1909: “After a shortage of turkeys for last Thanksgiving and Christmas, the birds will not be scarce this year, which also should mean lower prices. … After a city boycott, the Bell Telephone Co. has agreed to cut its rates, which the city said were too high. There have been ongoing negotiations for a Bell franchise. Home Telephone Co. rates here also will be studied, although Home says it is losing money on city lines. … Is Halloween Saturday or Monday. The usual date of Oct. 31 falls on a Sunday and now there is a discussion about what date to observe.”
