Second-half push propels Lions soccer, 3-1

? Will Burg, Gavin Fischer and Matthias Reiber each scored goals, and Lawrence High turned a soccer game that was scoreless at the half into a 3-1 victory over Leavenworth on Tuesday.

“The first half, we had probably five or six scoring opportunities we didn’t capitalize on,” Lawrence coach Matt Anderson said. “We talked about how we had to finish on our open opportunities in the second half.”

Reiber obviously listened. He gave the Lions a 1-0 lead a minute into the second half.

About 12 minutes later, Fischer scored to make it a 2-0 edge.

The Pioneers responded with about 15 minutes to play to cut it to 2-1, but Burg scored on a penalty kick set up by a drive by Enoch Quaye, and the Lions improved to 4-10-1.

“We were just able to finish in the second half,” Anderson said. “The first half, we had, seriously, five or six one-on-ones with the goalie. We had a couple of totally open frames where we just missed wide, or it would have been a different story at the half. But it wasn’t.”

Lawrence will conclude the regular season Thursday at Shawnee Heights.
