From the Lawrence Daily World for Oct. 16, 1909: “There will be no closed cars on the electric line for three weeks, regardless of weather, due to shipping problems. Otherwise, the work on the line continues to make good progress and the Henry Street line out to Mississippi will be opened with regular service next Monday. . . . An evangelist now preaching at the Baptist Church is drawing increasingly large crowds. The Rev. M.F. Ham is making quite an impact with his magnetic personality. . . . County Superintendent Bowman has called a teachers meeting tomorrow to talk over the teaching of ethics in county schools. He says he has some original ideas on how the pupils should be handled and is very earnest about a new state program that he hopes to expand in local schools. . . . Officials with the United State Engineers will be here to study and correct geological maps for the region. They will map some 900 square miles before they leave and will have their headquarters at the old jail.”
