Lawrence may soon gain a new sister city.
Commissioners at their meeting this evening are being asked to sign an agreement that would make Iniades, Greece, Lawrence’s third sister city.
Kansas University’s theater department has been sending students to study in the small Greek community for about 20 years.
Members of Lawrence’s Sister Cities Advisory Committee have been discussing the possibility of adding Iniades as a sister city for about a year. The group is not currently asking city commissioners for any additional funding to add the city.
Instead, group members have said Lawrence’s Sister Cities program has enough money in a reserve fund to pay for any expenses related to the expansion for several years.
The city provides about $7,500 per year to the Sister Cities program, which frequently hosts students from the city’s other two sister cities — Eutin, Germany, and Hiratsuka, Japan. The group also receives private donations.
Commissioners meet at 6:35 p.m. today at City Hall, Sixth and Massachusetts streets.
