Baldwin City ? After 33 straight losses, Ottawa High’s football team finally got a win.

“This is huge,” OHS coach Marc Bergan said after an 18-7 victory Friday over winless Baldwin. “It started way before I got here. We went through a tough time last year. The kids never gave up and they battled. We lost a few close ones this year, but we knew we were getting closer. It had been a long time coming. Those seniors have been through an awful lot. They were very emotional, and they should have been.”

Ottawa’s losing streak dated to the 2005 season. Bergan, in his second year as Ottawa’s coach, was on hand for just 14 of the setbacks.

Baldwin (0-5) had lost its last two games against previously winless teams.

Baldwin took the initial drive 73 yards in 12 plays to take an early 7-0 lead, but the Cyclones (1-4) scored 18 unanswered points to ruin the Bulldogs’ homecoming.

“I thought that was really important,” Bergan said. “It was disappointing to let them drive all the way down on the first drive. But it was very exciting to see us answer and drive right down and score ourselves.”

Ottawa answered with an 85-yard drive that only took nine plays. Ottawa senior Corbin Goedert threw the first of his three touchdowns to cap the drive.

The Cyclones took advantage of great field position to score their second touchdown. They went 28 yards in two plays to take a 12-7 lead. They scored one more with 6:44 remaining.

Ottawa held the ball during the final 5:59. The Cyclones ran the ball nine times as they marched down-field and ran out the clock.

“Corbin is a very good quarterback,” Bergan said of Goedert. “He threw the ball well tonight. He is such a smart football player and he has such a quiet confidence about him.”

Next Friday, Ottawa will host De Soto for its homecoming. Baldwin will travel to Louisburg.

Tonganoxie 75, Santa Fe Trail 12

Tonganoxie — Tonganoxie dominated Santa Fe Trail, and at no point was it more obvious than the second quarter, when the Chieftains rolled up 458 yards and scored 49 points.

Already up 7-0 after one quarter, senior running back Austen Holloway set the tone with a 40-yard rushing score on the first play of the second quarter.

After that, junior quarterback Jeremy Carlisle ran 68 yards for a touchdown on the second play of a drive.

Then senior back D.J. Lindsay created a one-play drive with an 80-yard rushing score less than three minutes into the quarter.

Carlisle scored the next two touchdowns runs for Tonganoxie (4-1, 2-0 Kaw Valley League) — first from 32 yards out, then from 33 on the next drive.

Senior running back Jeremie Maus broke a 22-yard TD run.

And just when it looked like the video game-esque period had come to a close as THS started a drive on its own 10-yard line with 35 seconds left, the scoring explosion finished with an 83-yard journey to the end zone from Carlisle as the first-half clock expired.

The Chieftains’ starters only played one series in the second half, and THS totaled 635 yards of offense for the night.

Carlisle finished with 12 carries, 287 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

Lindsay gained 131 yards and scored twice with just three carries.

Santa Fe Trail (0-5, 0-3) scored late in the fourth quarter.

Quarterback Phoenix Anshutz found Blade Wright for a six-yard score, and Daryl Starkebaum ran in a one-yard TD with less than a minute to go.

But the night ended much as it started when Brady Waldeier returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards to cap an amazing night for THS.

The Chieftains are at home again Friday for a nonconference matchup with St. James Academy.

The Chargers will play host to Kansas City Ward.

Louisburg 28, Eudora 14

Eudora — It seemed the Eudora Cardinals were just inches short.

Trailing by six with under four minutes to play against Louisburg, on a crucial fourth-and-six from Eudora’s 32-yard line, EHS quarterback Evan Cleveland followed blocks by left guard and tackle Alex Cox and Jonathan Morrison on a sweep. Cleveland, the Eudora bench and homecoming crowd cheered in anticipation of a first-down signal from the officials. But that call never came, and after a spot and measurement, Eudora was just inches short, and Louisburg took over on downs.

Louisburg’s Alex Gentges then broke through the Eudora defense for a 24-yard touchdown, capping the victory for Louisburg.

After forcing a Louisburg punt to start the contest, the Cardinals scored on their opening possession on a Chris Pyle 10-yard burst up the middle. But Gentges added two touchdowns in the second quarter.

Just before halftime, Eudora’s Christian Richardson took a reverse to the right and threw a deep ball to receiver Brian Katzfey, who had a step on the defensive back. But the ball bounced just off his fingertips, and the Cardinals trailed, 14-7, at the break.

Louisburg bumped its lead to 13 on a 12-play, 87-yard drive that culminated in a Ryan Roberts 11-yard touchdown run, before Cleveland pulled Eudora within a touchdown on an 11-yard run early in the fourth. Eudora forced Louisburg to punt on the ensuing possession, but Eudora couldn’t complete the comeback.

Cleveland led Eudora with 64 yards rushing on 21 carries, while Gentges ran for 119 yards on 11 carries and scored three touchdowns for Louisburg. Eudora totaled just six first downs and 191 total yards.

Eudora (4-1) will entertain Gardner-Edgerton on Friday.

De Soto — De Soto played stingy defense throughout, including a big fourth-down stop from their own one-yard line to close out the first half, but ultimately suffered a homecoming setback.

Logan Clark scored De Soto’s lone touchdown with 7:03 left in the third on a one-yard plunge.

But with 2:37 remaining, De Soto missed what would be the game-winning field goal from the 23-yard line.

De Soto (1-4) will travel to Ottawa on Friday.

Perry — Brad Phillips carried 23 times for 92 yards and a score, and Perry-Lecompton picked up its first win of the season.

Kaws quarterback Jeremy Immenschuh was 8-14 passing for 78 yards and a touchdown.

Lansing quarterback Cullen Demarest finished 13-25 for 225 yards with a passing touchdown and a running TD.

Perry-Lecompton (1-4) will travel to Piper on Friday.

Brandon Barnes scored both of Oskaloosa’s TDs, on runs of one and six yards.

Wathena improved to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the Delaware Valley League, while Oskie fell to 4-1 and 4-1.
