Oklahoma City ? Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford will not start for No. 8 Oklahoma on Saturday at No. 17 Miami.

Sooners coach Bob Stoops said Thursday that Landry Jones will start for Bradford, who hasn’t played since spraining the AC joint in his right, throwing shoulder the first week of the season.

“Sam has made daily progress, but we don’t feel like he’s quite where he needs to be yet,” Stoops said in a statement. “Our team has a lot of confidence in Landry’s ability and we’re looking forward to going into the game with him at quarterback.”

Stoops did not say whether Bradford could serve as Jones’ backup. When he last spoke to reporters, Stoops said he had not ruled out playing both quarterbacks against the Hurricanes (2-1).

The Sooners (2-1) have yet to play third-stringer Drew Allen, instead preserving the freshman’s redshirt and using John Nimmo to replace Jones late in their last two blowouts.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson said the offense doesn’t change when Landry plays instead of Bradford.

“They’re both very similar,” he said. “We’re really more concerned about what the line can do, what our receivers can do and what’s our plan of attack and to execute and to play sound football.

“We’re more worried about the surrounding parts than those two guys.”

Bradford sprained his shoulder when he was slammed to the turf late in the first half of Oklahoma’s 14-13 loss to BYU on Sept. 5.

Watson one back at Players

Timonium, Md. — Tom Watson credited skillful iron play for his efficient 4-under 66 in the opening round of the Senior Players Championship. It was his putter, however, that set the tone.

Watson saved par with an 8-footer on the first hole Thursday, then dropped in a 25-foot downhill birdie putt on No. 2. He made his only bogey on 13 and finished tied with Jay Haas in second place behind unheralded Lonnie Nielsen, who had eight birdies and three bogeys in an up-and-down 65.

Moodie leads LPGA event

Prattville, Ala. — Scotland’s Janice Moodie shot a bogey-free 8-under 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over 14-year-old Alexis Thompson in the Navistar LPGA Classic, with Michelle Wie and top-ranked Lorena Ochoa two strokes back.

Moodie, a two-time winner on the LPGA Tour, played her final nine holes — the front nine on The Senator course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail’s Capitol Hill complex, in 6-under 30. She birdied her final four holes and six of her last seven.

Two tied at Turning Stone

Verona, N.Y. — Rookie Leif Olson and Tim Petrovic shot 6-under 66s in rainy and cold conditions to share the first-round lead in the Turning Stone Resort Championship, the first event of the five-tournament Fall Series.

Matt Kuchar, John Senden and Vaughn Taylor were a stroke back, and Adam Scott, Scott Gutschewski, Kevin Stadler, Ken Duke, Jimmy Walker, Nicholas Thompson and Matt Jones shot 68s. Defending champ Dustin Johnson birdied his last two holes for a 69.

The round was stopped because of darkness with a handful of players still on the soggy Atunyote Golf Club course.

Television ratings strong

New York — Television ratings for NFL games are off to a strong start this season. Fox has posted its highest average rating for the first three weeks since the network started televising the league in 1994. Fox said Thursday that it’s averaging an 11.2 rating and 24 share, up 23 percent from the same period last year.

Earlier this season, the Giants-Cowboys Sunday night game on NBC drew the highest rating for any prime-time regular-season game since 2000.

Favre on injury report

Eden Prairie, Minn. — Brett Favre is on Minnesota’s injury report for the first time this season. The 39-year-old quarterback was listed Thursday as being limited in practice because of a foot injury.

After the Vikings beat San Francisco last Sunday, Favre complained of aching in his right foot, left knee, both shoulders and neck.

Nike: No deal with Vick

Nike says it does not have a “contractual relationship” with Michael Vick, a day after the quarterback’s agent announced a deal with the manufacturer.

In a statement released Thursday, Nike says it has “agreed to supply product to Michael Vick as we do a number of athletes who are not under contract with Nike.”

On Wednesday, Michael Principe, the managing director of BEST, the agency that represents Vick, announced the Philadelphia Eagles player had a new deal with Nike during a panel discussion at the Sports Sponsorship Symposium.

Nike, which signed Vick as a rookie in 2001, terminated his contract in August 2007 after he filed a plea agreement admitting his involvement in a dogfighting ring.

West returns to Cavs

Independence, Ohio — Delonte West worked out with his Cleveland Cavaliers teammates on Thursday after missing the first two days of training camp.

“He had a great practice,” said Cavaliers coach Mike Brown, who said the absences were unexcused. “It was great to have him on the floor.”

McDermott’s son picks UNI

Ames, Iowa — Iowa State coach Greg McDermott’s son has agreed to sign with Northern Iowa. Doug McDermott, a 6-foot-7 forward from Ames High, has accepted a scholarship with Northern Iowa over the chance to be a walk-on for the Cyclones. Doug McDermott will follow in his father’s footsteps by playing for the Panthers. Greg McDermott played at Northern Iowa from 1984 to 1988 and later coached there for five seasons. He’s still close friends with current Panthers coach Ben Jacobson, who was his top assistant at Northern Iowa.

Penn State extends coach

State College, Pa. — Penn State gave basketball coach Ed DeChellis a three-year contract extension, rewarding him after the Nittany Lions won the NIT title last season. DeChellis is entering his seventh season in Happy Valley. The new deal announced Thursday keeps him under contract at his alma mater through the 2013-14 season.
