A Haskell Indian Nations University freshman died Monday after being incarcerated in a Montana county jail, authorities said.
A.J. LongSoldier, 18, was booked on Sunday into Hill County Jail, where a detention officer requested medical assistance for him about 10:30 p.m. Sunday, said Hill County Sheriff Don Brostrom.
LongSoldier, who was reportedly in Montana to attend his grandfather's funeral, was taken by ambulance to Northern Montana Hospital in Havre, where he died.
The cause of death was not announced. The Montana Department of Criminal Investigation has been requested to investigate the incident.
LongSoldier, of Harlem, Mont., had been incarcerated on a warrant for contempt of court.

This really concerns me, because this guy was arrested on a contempt of court charge (which means he probably didn't pay a traffic ticket) and that is no reason to have become that “ill” in a jail. He was a basketball phenom in high school (look him up) but he was also a reservation Indian with a very hard scrabble life. They've done an autopsy on him in Billings and they still haven't released the cause of death to his mother. If it turns out that this kid was mistreated in the jail I seriously hope somebody jumps down their throat and breaks out on their rear like poison ivy.

I was raised in 40 miles from where this young man lived and played high school basketball… very sad.

Death has to be pronounced by a physician, so even if he had been unresponsive, no pulse, no respirations (basically dead) he could not have been “officially” pronounced dead at the jail. It is a technicality, but it is the way it is. Such a sad thing - condolences to his family.

domino, you're wrong. Death is pronounced by the coroner (who is also a physician). They often go to the scene of the crime to announce a death. if your head gets blown off by a bomb, they don't take you to the hospital to pronounce you dead - they do it at the scene (which could have been in the jail). Either way, the article is misleading.

If he was in jail when he became sick (or whatever happened) then he is still in custody while at the hospital, so technically he is still “in jail” while at the hospital.

How incredibly sad. His mom didn't even know he was incarcerated and gets a call that he has died. And they won't share the autopsy report with her? OK Something clearly NEEDS to be investigated. This young man didn't deserve this! What a terrible loss.

This is an incredibly sad situation, and yes, it is a terrible loss for his family and the community he is from. But let's look at the realities… The autopsy was probably not done at the time this article was printed… it's not just like they can go in a lab and in an hour have everything done—this isn't television, folks. Unfortunately these things take a lot of time, especially since the autopsy is being performed several hundred miles from where he died, in Billings—and to get there from Havre (where the Hill County jail is located), you travel 2 lane highways the entire way, making the trip itself close to 5 hours by car. (Montana is very sparsely populated, especially in the north central region where Hill county is located). This, by itself, is not a reason to immediately think that there is wrongdoing or cover up or anything like that. I'm sure more information will come out later this week.

Sounds like he had been reporting to the jailor that he was sick at least a couple of days before he passed according to this article:

Very heartbreaking. My condolences to his family and friends.
While I doubt it was a matter of outright abuse or mistreatment, the linked article as well as the comments to the article indicate there may be good reason to believe that neglect was the case. And it is totally inexcusable if that is the case.
Seems to be some rather serious racial issues up that way too…sad story all around.

being half Native American (on my mom's side), and having plenty of relatives living on the reservations in South Dakota, it's obvious to see, and rather sad to see the amount of racism that goes on up there towards the Native American people. It is common place, and somewhat disgusting to see what is said to the Native Americans, how they are treated, and how they are sit on a back burner.

How has this been twisted into a racial issue?
If he would have taken responsibility and taken care of his ticket or whatever the original charge was, he wouldn't have been arrested for the warrant. Thus, not in jail. Thus…
It is unfortunate, but could have been avoided all together.

Because he was a Native American, and they get treated differently in that part of the country. If he would have been a white man, he would have gotten the treatment he was requesting.

Fact is that shortly after 8pm Blaine County Sheriff Glen Huestis was informed that AJ was in need of medical attention. However, he was not taken to the hospital until 10:26 pm. This 2 hour delay in recieving medical attention is unacceptable and the Sheriff needs to be held accountable.
